Situated in both DuPage and Kane counties, Batavia is a city in Illinois and is a suburb of Chicago.
The city was first founded in 1833 and by the end of the century, it was home to six windmill manufacturing companies, earning it the nickname “The Windmill City.”
As of 2019, Batavia was estimated to be the home of 26,316 residents. Almost half of the residents are families with children.
Many residents make the 35-mile commute into The Windy City to take advantage of Batavia’s small town and family-friendly vibe.

Students living in Batavia attend schools in the Batavia Public School District 101, which is made up of six elementary schools, one middle school, Rotolo Middle School, and one high school, Batavia High School. Currently, the system educates 6,003 kids in grades PreK through 12th.
The system is ranked one of the best 30 school districts in Illinois, as well as the 12th (out of 408) best school districts for athletes in Illinois. The school system boasts an impressive 16:1 student to teacher ratio and an average graduation rate of 95%.
BPS101 offers a unique learning experience for 3rd through 8th graders interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). At John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School a select number of students are invited to study on part of the Aurora University campus.
Students at Batavia High School have plenty of opportunities open to them including band, drama, athletics, and more than 40 clubs.
Batavia is also home to several private schools, including the Montessori Academy, Holy Cross Catholic School, Immanuel Lutheran School, and Covenant Christian School Batavia.

Parks and Recreation in Batavia
Residents can choose from more than 10 community parks located within the city, including 14-acre Engstrom Park.
The park boasts a children’s playground with a 50-foot zipline, open fields that are perfect for soccer, a baseball field and basketball court, a large picnic area, and a 1-mile paved jogging/ walking trail.
With 58.4 acres, West Main Community Park, Disc Golf Course, and Batavia Bark Park is the city’s largest outdoor recreational space.
The park offers something for everyone, including a 2-acre fishing pond, full-size basketball courts, an 18-hole disc golf course that is easy enough for beginners, while also offering a challenge to intermediate and advanced players, a roller hockey court, and a paved jogging/ walking path. A separate fenced area gives dogs the opportunity to safely play.
Stretching over 12 miles, Batavia Riverwalk is often the site of community events, such as the Celebration of Lights Festival and the Windmill City
Festival, held each July. Batavia Riverwalk has plenty of activities to choose from, including a children’s playground, fishing area, picnic area, paddle boats during the summer months, and outdoor ice skating when conditions allow it during the winter months.
Walkers and joggers can head to the boardwalk for amazing views of the river, the wildflower sanctuary, and windmills produced from the mid-1800s to the late 1940s. Here, residents can also visit the Batavia Depot Museum, housed in the original station built in 1854 and featuring a large collection of artifacts donated by residents over the years.
Clark Island Recreational Area consists of 11 acres spread over three islands in the Fox River. Bridges connect the islands to the Fox River Bike Trail.
This area features a 11,000 square foot skate park, baseball diamond, walking/ jogging/ biking paths, fishing area, and picnic area with shelter.
South Mill Creek Community Park is another great option for Batavia residents who enjoy spending time outdoors. Centered around a large wetland area, the 32-acre park includes basketball and tennis courts, fitness exercise stations, children’s playground, walking/ jogging/ biking paths and a sensory garden with textured walks, music panels, and plants.
Batavia residents can anticipate freezing, windy winters and warm, wet summers.
During the cold season (December to March), temperatures range from an average low of 16°F to a high of 30°F.
It’s not unusual for the area to experience snow, but the Batavia Street Department has guidelines in place to keep the roads as safe as possible.
Batavia residents can expect temperatures ranging from an average high of 84°F to an average low of 64°F during the warm season (May 23 – September 20).
